“Finding Purpose in the Arena: Incorporating Horses into Recovery Work” – an Upcoming E3A Presentation

In the equine-assisted field, many of us begin with a "nudge"— a realization that our work with horses has a capacity to help people that extends far beyond the barn. But translating that passion into a sustainable, professional career requires more than just good intentions. It requires asking the right questions about why we do this, who we serve, and how we build the professional framework to support that work.

I am excited to announce a special upcoming Zoom presentation for Equine Experiential Educational Association (E3A) members: "Finding Purpose in the Arena: Incorporating Horses into Recovery Work," taking place Wednesday, September 16^th at 7pm ET.

Bridging the Gap to Recovery

This presentation will explore the transition into facilitation in the recovery field—a journey that many practitioners find daunting, especially when they lack a background in addiction treatment. I will be sharing my personal journey: how, after years of facilitating equine-assisted experiences alongside therapists, I stepped into the recovery field myself and discovered a powerful new sense of purpose.

With over sixteen years of experience facilitating more than 14,000 people in the Equine Interaction Experience at English Mountain Recovery, I’ve learned that the recovery population is unique in its needs.

We will discuss:

·        How horses can support clients navigating recovery.

·        The specific benefits of this work for this population.

·        The practical realities of adapting your skills to a new setting while maintaining clear professional boundaries—or, as we often say, "staying in your lane".

This work is more than just a passion project; it is a discipline that rewards preparation and professionalization. Whether you are wondering if you should pursue a therapy license or stick to the educational/coaching model, understanding the nuances of the field is critical.
